AEO explained for brand teams
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making a brand show up, and be recommended, in the answers AI engines give: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO
- SEO aims for a place in a list of links. Success is a ranking and a click.
- AEO aims for a place in the answer itself. Success is the engine naming the brand, ideally as the one to choose.
- GEO (generative engine optimization) is mostly another name for the same goal. Some use it for the content side, AEO for the whole job.
The big difference: in a search result, the buyer still chooses. In an AI answer, the engine has often chosen for them.
What the engines draw on
- What they learned in training: older, broad knowledge about the brand and category.
- What they read live: many engines search the web while answering, then repeat what they find. Review sites, "best of" lists, forums and the brand's own pages all feed in.
- How clearly the brand is described: engines confuse brands with similar names. A clear statement of who the brand is, on its own site and elsewhere, reduces that.
What AEO work looks like
- Make the brand's pages state plainly what it is, who it's for and why it's chosen.
- Earn mentions on the third-party pages engines cite for the category.
- Fix wrong or outdated statements at their source.
- Measure again, and keep the before-and-after proof.
How to measure it
Measure verdicts, not volume. For each answer, record whether the brand was a Top pick, Recommended, Mentioned in passing, Named with caution or Not mentioned, and keep the quote. Separate questions that leave the brand out (is it Found?) from questions that name it (is it Recommended?).
